The Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints are set to face off on Monday night.
Adrian Peterson, the team’s all-time leading rusher in franchise history will be facing off against his former team for the first time.
Former Viking Randy Moss will also be making his return to Minnesota and will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor. Moss will be a part of the ESPN crew working the game.
In 2000, both teams met in the second round of the playoffs. Moss caught only two passes that game, but both went for touchdowns (53 yards and 68).
“I think inside their heads it was, `Uh-oh, you don’t want to get me started, that’s the worst thing you ever want to do,”‘ Moss said. “The energy level was there and I just had to get us off with a touchdown.” (ESPN.com)
Fellow wide receiver Cris Carter on the 68-yard touchdown:
“Not a lot of people can make that play,” Carter said of Moss, who runs a sub-4.2 for 40 yards. “It was unbelievable that he could outrun the angle they had on him and make that play in traffic. His nickname is `Super Freak,’ and he showed why.’ ” (ESPN.com)
Daunte Culpepper went 17/31 for 302 yards and three touchdowns. Carter caught eight passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Robert Smith rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. John Randle recorded a sack. Vikings won 34-16.
Culpepper played on a sprained ankle, but did not play like someone who was.
Aaron Brooks went 30/48 for 295 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Saints. Chad Morton had 13 receptions for 106 yards. Willie Jackson had nine receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown.
This was Smith and Randle’s final home game as members of the Vikings. Smith retired after the season and Randle signed with the Seattle Seahawks after being released due to salary cap reasons.
The Vikings advanced to the NFC Championship Game, but lost 41-0 to the New York Giants. They have won only two playoff games since.
The Vikings lead the all-time series 20-11, but the Saints have won the past four meetings.
