Transfer season started on Friday for the Texas Longhorns when walk-on quarterback Josh Covey announced his transfer to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks:
The 6’1, 200-pounder played quarterback at Georgetown, but began his Texas career at wide receiver. When the ‘Horns needed bodies at the quarterback position, he moved back and was the first non-scholarship option Texas in 2017.
Covey even drew some praise from head coach Tom Herman.
“Covey being a guy that’s actually somewhat impressive running around the cones, he’s an athletic dude, which is kind of what you want from your third quarterback is,” Herman said last spring. “He’s your third quarterback for a reason, so maybe he can add a dimension or get you out of a game running around a little bit back there, which hopefully he can provide.
