New Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane grabbed a stranglehold of the team’s roster on Friday, dealing two of the team’s bright spots: 2014 fourth overall pick Sammy Watkins and their top pick in the 2015 draft, Ronald Darby.
Watkins was due to enter free agency following this season, while Darby still had another year left on his contract. Both players were replaced with 2014 draftees who are set to become free agents at the end of the 2018 season, in Jordan Matthews and E.J. Gaines.
The Bills also loaded up on draft picks. While they dealt a sixth round pick to the Rams, they added a second and third round pick in next year’s draft. The team now has six picks in the top three rounds of the 2018 draft, which gives them prime positioning for any quarterback or star player they might want to acquire.
