Ravens Down to 75 Players Before Deadline
Today's deadline for NFL teams to cut their rosters down to 75 players has now passed. Just two days after the Baltimore Ravens waived nine players and placed two more on injured reserve, they made the necessary moves to trim the roster to 75.
These moves only featured one player getting cut. Undrafted rookie kicker Will Lutz was waived, as was expected given that Justin Tucker is the second highest paid kicker in football this season. Lutz was only on the team as a camp body and also to provide himself with valuable game tape to show other teams.
Two more players were moved to injured reserve, rookie defensive end Bronson Kaufusi (broken ankle) and undrafted tackle Stephane Nembot (undisclosed). The Kaufusi move was expected, given the severity of his injury that occurred in early August. Nembot is a bit surprising given that he was an undrafted rookie and his injury has not been disclosed. For now, it appears clear the Ravens saw something in him and want to keep him around for future usage.
Running back Lorenzo Taliaferro was also placed on the regular season physically unable to perform (PUP) list. This move was not surprising at all given that Taliaferro was the only eligible player left for PUP designation and with rookie running back Kenneth Dixon now dealing with a sprained MCL, the Ravens will have the luxury of having Taliaferro's services available after the first six weeks of the regular season.
Once Taliaferro returns to practice, he will have a three week window for the Ravens to decide whether or not to name him to the active roster. Though Dixon is now hurt, he's only expected to miss several weeks. The Ravens have three other running backs that seem likely to make the final roster so Taliaferro may need another injury to take place for him to join the active roster. Having missed 16 games over his two seasons in the NFL, Taliaferro has a reputation for being injury prone and so it may prove difficult for him to ascend the running back depth chart when he returns.
The Ravens will have to further decimate the roster by the end of the week. The final deadline for NFL rosters to reach the regular season number of 53 players is at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 3rd. For those players remaining on the bubble, their last chance to make an impact will be during the Ravens' fourth and final preseason game, scheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m. against the New Orleans Saints.
