Shades of last season’s injury woes are starting to happen at the 49ers’ training camp.

The injured reserve casualty being inside linebacker, Malcolm Smith with a torn pectoral. It’s an unfortunate start for the former Super Bowl MVP’s first preseason with the 49ers. However, it’s important for the team and fans to remain optimistic after this recent ailment to the 49ers.

What does Smith’s injury mean for the 49ers?

One of the things that affected the 49ers’ defense greatly was the injuries to the inside linebackers early on. Both Ray-Ray Armstrong and NaVorro Bowman suffered season-ending injuries.

It’s something that kept the defense at the bottom of the rankings in many of the categories. Most of all, making the inside of the defense a liability because of the lack of depth behind those two.

However, fans of the 49ers don’t need to worry about that. It appears as if Reuben Foster will take over as the Will linebacker. The first-rounder has impressed coaches immensely throughout training camp; now it seems the era of Foster will begin.

Now the linebacker positions are set. Bowman and Foster control the inside as the Mike and Will linebackers, respectively, while Ahmad Brooks takes over as the Sam linebacker.

It’s a good thing the 49ers traded up for the Alabama product. Roll Tide!
