In recent news, it’s being reported that the 49ers might be giving up on Carlos Hyde. The new regime of Shanahan and Lynch feel as though Hyde has something to prove with this upcoming season.
I think as a player one of the great things about this league and, frankly, what drove me to get back into it is that you’re always proving yourself… Particularly when there is a new regime. I hope Carlos feels that way, but I also can tell you that we’re really high on him and what he might be able to do in this offense. We think he can be a highly productive player, but we’re eager to see.
It’s a surprising turn of events, especially considering how experts believe he’s the centerpiece of the offense. He’s also in the final year of his rookie contract and will be tested to see if he can remain as the team’s replacement for Frank Gore.
How did it get to this point?
The biggest problem that the regime can point to is Hyde’s inability to stay healthy. He’s a top ten running back in the league when he can remain on the field. However, his injuries have halted his development to take the next step.
Since being named the team’s starter after Gore’s departure, Hyde has missed twelve games in the two seasons since being named the starter. The last two seasons have seen him leave with a season-ending injury in both years.
How will the 49ers replace Hyde?
The new heads of the team will most likely draft one of the top running back prospects. Someone like a Fournette would go pretty early. Same applies to someone like McCaffrey. However, the one name that could go to the 49ers with the team’s second-round pick is Dalvin Cook.
It won’t be surprising if the team doesn’t select a running back early on, because of the current depth behind Hyde. Guys like Hightower and Harris won’t cut it. The team needs more depth at that position.
Can Hyde change the new regime’s mind?
Hyde can do it only if he can excel in Shanahan’s system. If he gets over 1,200 yards rushing the ball, then he’ll be able to re-sign with the team. If he stays healthy and injury-free throughout the season as well, then he will be looking at a big payday.
However, if he gets injured, and the new back impresses in Hyde’s absence then Hyde will be usurped of his starting spot. It all depends if he can stay healthy or not.
