Tennessee Titans: A Competition Many Overlook

Lauren Moore

Who's competing for the fullback position with Collin Mooney in the Titans backfield?

Preseason doesn’t tell you much about what a team is really going to look like going into the regular season. Many teams sit their starters, while others don’t.

As the Titans began their preseason Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers, all the focus was on Jake Locker, the new 3-4 defense, and rookie Bishop Sankey, but a position that was probably overlooked was the fullback position.

Fullbacks are fading away more and more each season, as offenses change into more no huddle, up-tempo; however, the fullback competition has been heating up quickly throughout training camp for the Titans.

Last year, Collin Mooney was the starting fullback until injuring his hamstring. The Titans brought Quinn Johnson back in. During the offseason, the Titans cut Johnson, so it seemed that Mooney would have his path paved to being the starting fullback, but that wasn’t the case.

Running back Jackie Battle has given Mooney a surprising competition throughout training camp and even through the first preseason game.

During training camp the past two weeks, Battle was getting close to 95 percent of the first-team reps. This competition was one I don’t think anyone seen coming.

Battle started the game with the first-team, but also played some all the way into the fourth quarter. He finished the game with two carries for nine yards with one touchdown. He had one catch for 11 yards; however, he was targeted twice, but the second pass from Zach Mettenberger went through his hands bouncing off his shoulder pads, which resulted into a late fourth quarter interception. Being down 16-13, Mettenberger drove the Titans down the field and capped off the late winning drive with a seven-yard Battle run.

Mooney played in the game, but didn’t do anything in the passing or running game.

The competition will continue throughout the preseason, but after watching training camp and this first game it seems that Battle leads the competition, but I know Mooney won’t back down just yet.

User Feedback

Battle is who he is. A straight line runner w/ power and little wiggle or even vision. He'll generally hit the hole pretty hard and move a pile and maybe break some tackles.

As a FB, we'll see.

I think saying he was "great" in KC is a good be exaggerated.
