Stephon Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame

In spite of a slow start to the 2013 season, Stephon Tuitt has the potential to be a dominant interior lineman in the NFL.

Height: 6'6

Weight: 322

40 time: n/a

Class: JR

  • Powerful at the point of attack
  • Adept at splitting double teams
  • Plays with “heavy hands”; good swim and rip moves
  • Sheds blocks well
  • Very athletic for his size

  • Not very quick off the snap
  • Inconsistent pad level
  • Can struggle to bend the edge

Injury History:

  • Off-season hernia surgery, along with a nagging knee issue early in the season, contributed to a slow start by Tuitt. He also gained weight before the 2013 season, and looked more explosive in the 305 range than he does at 320.

Stephon Tuitt is what you would call a “dancing bear”. Tuitt is light on his feet, but with his overwhelming power he can take over games. While he spends most of his time at 5-tech DE in Bob Diaco’s defensive scheme, Tuitt is at his best when he’s allowed to penetrate from the 3-tech spot. For this reason, I have him listed as a DT instead of a DE. While he isn’t exceptionally quick off the snap, his strength and hand usage allow him to move linemen out of his way and he’s hard to stop once he gets a head of steam. In addition, he’s a good enough athlete to change direction and give chase when he needs to. Shedding some weight would allow him to gain back some explosiveness. He would thrive in a role similar to the one the Jets have carved out for rookie Sheldon Richardson.

User Feedback

I think that Tuitt is one of "those guys" that can make plays no matter where you plug him in. I think he fits in any scheme, but I honestly think in the NFL he is best fit to be a 5-technique. He already has tremendous coaching there and has shown he can be dominant there. If he trims back up this offseason he should be one of the most coveted guys for any 3-4 team.

Gotta go with Matt here... I like Tuitt at the 5. If you think he's not quick off the snap at this level, he'll sink fast at the 3 at the next level. He's quicker than he's given credit for.
