The Denver Broncos’ No Fly Zone featuring the Aqib Talib-and-Chris Harris Jr. cover tandem has been ranked second best in the NFL by USA Today Sports.

This won’t come as a surprise to Denver Broncos fans (or anyone really…), with Pro Football Focus listing Harris Jr. and Talib first and second respectively for coverage in 2016.

While Bradley Roby did not have an ideal season, he still rounds out a forceful nickel package. While T.J. Ward and Darian Stewart are a hard-hitting safety combo but perhaps not as threatening as their top-ranked teammates.

A substantial amount of work with defensive coordinator Joe Woods and secondary coach Marcus Robertson should push these two into the upper echelon of safeties.

Denver posted league lows in touchdown passes allowed (13), passer rating (69.7) and completion rate (55.4%). According to Nate Davis of USA Today Sports, “the pass rush is a big reason” for these figures. The defensive line will need to make significant improvements to their pass rush this season if they are to have any hope in returning the Broncos to their former greatness.

Broncos’ Strengths

The Broncos’ secondary were only outdone by the Seattle Seahawks’, who claimed the top spot on this list. Strong safety Kam Chancellor and free safety Earl Thomas are regarded by many as the leading players at their positions, and corner Richard Sherman is still playing at an elite level.

The New York Giants came in at no. 3 with safety Landon Collins being a high impact player. The defensive end was third behind Denver’s Von Miller and Oakland’s Khalil Mack in voting for defensive player of the year.

A shock came in the form of the Jacksonville Jaguars, whose corner Jalen Ramsey was largely responsible for bringing them up to fourth spot. Defensive backs Rod Isaac and Ashton Youboty anchored the fifth-ranked pass defense, and are expected to get even better, as long as the offense offers better support.

The New England Patriots round out the top 5. Stephon Gilmore and Malcolm Butler will make another strong corner tandem – ideal for the team as they often have to defend the pass. Devin McCourty’s cornerback history makes him top-notch in covering.
