Which running back will step up behind Jay Ajayi?
It is confirmed that running back Jay “J-Train” Ajayi is out with a concussion. The Dolphins have said that it is a mild concussion and that Ajayi should only be out a week. Ajayi has already proven himself last year by being the fourth running back to rush for back to back 200 yard plus games. I would expect the Dolphins to take it a bit easier with Ajayi being he will be the go to guy when the season starts.
So the question now is, who will get the majority of the reps with Ajayi out, Damien Williams or Kenyan Drake?
Williams was the go to guy last year behind Ajayi. He had 35 touches for 115 rushing yards and three rushing touch downs. Williams also had 23 receptions for 249 receiving yards and three receiving touch downs. This will be Williams fourth year in the NFL.
This is Drakes second year in the NFL. His rookie season, Drake had 33 touches for 179 yards with two touch downs. Drake also had nine receptions for 46 yards and no receiving touch downs.
Back in May 2017, The Dolphins resigned Williams to a $1.797 million contract. Even though, the Dolphins are wanting to involve Drake more in the run game. Both Williams and Drake played in all games last year. Drake is considered the early favorite for the backup position. Head Coach Adam Gase wants Drake to be an all-round back and not to try and force the big plays. That will all come with experience which Williams has.
One thing is certain, Williams and Drake need to put it all on the line and give training camp everything they have and win that position.
Will it be Drake or Williams? You decide.
